About Kyrgyzstan as a country

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southeast, and China to the east. The terrain of Kyrgyzstan is mostly mountains, with an average elevation of 2,750 metres (9,000 ft). The highest point is at 4,995 metres (16,384 ft) in the Tian Shan range. The country's lowest point is at 375 metres (1,230 ft) in the Fergana Valley near Uzbekistan.

The principal river system is the Syr Darya, which empties into the Aral Sea. There are several other major rivers: the Jalal-Abad River, which flows into the Fergana Valley; the Naryn River, which rises in the Tian Shan and empties into Lake Issyk Kul; and the Kara Darya River, which forms part of the border with Tajikistan.

Kyrgyzstan has a diverse climate. In the Fergana Valley, temperatures can reach 40 °C (104 °F) in summer and fall below −20 °C (−4 °F) in winter. In the Tian Shan Mountains, temperatures range from −15 °C (5 °F) in winter to 18 °C (64 °F) in summer.

Kyrgyzstan is home to a large variety of animal species. Wildlife includes Marco Polo sheep, ibexes, snow leopards, lynxes, wolves, brown bears and red deer. Birds include eagles, hawks and vultures. Insects include bees, wasps and butterflies.

The Kyrgyz people are a Turkic ethnic group that make up around seventy percent of the population of Kyrgyzstan. Other ethnic groups include Russians (19%), Uzbeks (14%) and Tatars (3%). The majority of Kyrgyz people are Sunni Muslims. Russian is the most widely spoken language followed by Kyrgyz and Uzbek.
